Choice Disney Tunes
It’s been a while since I’ve seen a classic Disney movie…ok maybe a month, but one thing about is similar about all of them, they have really cool soundtracks. I’ve decided to countdown my top 10 favourite Disney tracks. Now just to be clear, these are my favourites, I know everyone will disagree with this list, and I probably will in about a week, so let’s get it started.
10. Just Around The River Bend (Pocahontas)

I’ve only ever seen Pocahontas once and it almost 11 years ago, but this song always stuck out to me. It has the sense of adventure and unpredictability to it. And when she flies off that waterfall, I almost fell out of my chair.
9. After Today (A Goofy Movie)

Finally, Max has had enough of being made fun of and such, and he’s going to get the girl of his dreams on the last day of school. Great plan, but maybe plan what you’re gonna say to the girl before hand Maxie. Sheesh. Anyway, I think the guy that does a front flip after coming off the bus should have had a bigger part in this film. What a waste of a good character.
8. Zip A Dee Doo Dah (Song Of The South)

One of my best childhood memories, the song that every kid in the neighborhood knew. Now I never actually have seen the full version of Song Of The South, but I had a cassette with this song on it, and I believe I wore it out. This is probably the song I sing most in the shower. This song, sung in the movie by James Baskett won an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
7. Circle Of Life (The Lion King)
![]()
Probably the best thing Elton John has done in the past 25 years is agreeing to do the soundtrack to this movie. Everyone of his songs he wrote with Tim Rice were all big hits. Can You Feel The Love Tonight, I Just Can’t Wait To Be King, Haukuna Matata, Circle Of Life and another song which appears on this list. The powerful opening sequence basically sums up Disney’s superior animation tecnologies compared to any of the competetors at that time. This was really a high point for Disney, after coming off hits like The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Beauty and The Beast, they followed it up with one of their most beloved stories.
6. Arabian Nights (Aladdin)

“Come on down
Stop on by
Hop a carpet and fly
To Another Arabian Night“
`nuff said
5. I Wanna Be Like You (The Jungle Book)

King Louis singing to Mowgli about nonsense isn`t the point, it`s the fact that people can`t resist dancing and singing along to this song. It`s infectious. Even Baloo can`t seem to help himself after he hears that beat.Although there are a lot of great songs on The Jungle Book Soundtrack, I can`t seem to get enough of this one.
4. You`ve Got A Friend In Me (Toy Story)

The obvious choice. As Andy takes Woody on an adventure downstairs, this song is the very first song in a Pixar feature length film. Another Disney song nominated for an Academy Award. Randy Newman does wonders with the Disney/Pixar soundtracks and debuts well with this song about friendship. I can`t say enough about the Toy Story series, and I can only hope that the upcoming Toy Story 3 does the rest of the movies justice.
3. I’ll Make A Man Out Of You (Mulan)

Wow, I’ve never respected Donny Osman before this moment, all I can saw is wow. This song is the most powerful and epic training song I’ve ever heard (especially the outstanding key change right when they were about to send Mulan home). Very catchy, to go along with the rest of the songs on this soundtrack, and to top it all off, it’s hilarious. And…it’s kinda bad ass as well.
2. Be Prepared (The Lion King)

Probably the best villain song out of all the Disney movies, and another written by Elton John. Because of The Lion King’s close ties with Shakespeare’s Hamlet, they actually had to make this movie dark and this song sinister, oily and potent. Period. “Yes, my teeth and ambitions are bare. Be prepared!” This song established a real hatred for Scar and his minions in this movie, making it a lot easier for Simba to seem like a hero.
1. Oo-de-Lally (Robin Hood)

“Robin Hood and Little John walking through the forest, laughing back and forth at what the other has to say. Reminiscin’, this-‘n’-thattin’ havin’ such a good time
Oo-de-lally, Oo-de-lally, golly, what a day.” This is a pretty Americanized version of the medival fairy tale, but is still amazing. This song takes us right into the lives of outlaws Little John and Robin Hood. There just going for a stoll down in a wooden glen, and all of a sudden Prince John’s men ambush the two, and well, you know the rest. I still can’t decide who is the best villain is, Prince John, Jafar or Scar. I think Price John would have to be my favourite because he’s not set out to be this monster, he’s just bitter about his Mother favoring King Richard when he was young. Then you have to include their minions, Jafar’s were just plain scary, Scar has a group of hyenas who are quite funny, but I think Sir Hiss takes the cake, even though two of Scar’s hyenas were played by Whoopi and Cheech. But that’s another blog. Classic song, classic movie.
