Cat Power

The first Cat Power record I owned was her 2006 release The Greatest, which I thought at the time to be a greatest hits collection, and it might as well could be. Chan Marshall (Cat Power) dedicates an entire album to southern pop and soul, and draws many comparisons to Dusty Springfield. She even employed the help of legendary musician Mabon “Teenie” Hodges, who was a big part of the Memphis soul scene in the 1970’s. He and his brothers Leroy and Charles helped Al Green create that smooth sound through most of the 70’s. It seems lately I can’t get enough of this album, as Marshall’s raspy voice cuts through every word and creates a very inviting experience.
